HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 36 Baptist Prep at No. 25 Corning
Baptist Prep (5-12 playoff record) seeks its first postseason win since 2011 when it posted an 11-2 record before moving up to Class 4A in 2012. It has taken three seasons for the Eagles to total 11 wins since dropping back down to Class 3A in 2018, beating teams with a combined 18-75 record. Baptist Prep's four victories this fall are against teams with a combined 2-31 record. Baptist Prep topped winless Two Rivers 27-0 last Friday night behind junior running back Isaac Devine's 100-plus yards, two touchdowns and 10 tackles. BP senior Mitchell Leavitt returned an interception 95 yards for a score and junior Jackson Mullen also scored a TD. BP had 31 players and five full-time coaches in August, 2018, but finishes 2020 with just two sophomores and four freshmen in its program.

Corning's five victories this season are its most since the 2007 Bobcats won nine times, including the 3-3A title. CHS has not won a state playoff game since it beat Greenbrier 21-14 in overtime in the opening round of the 1994 Class AA playoffs. Corning looks to cut back on the seven turnovers its committed the past two weeks (losses to Harrisburg and Piggott). Corning averages almost 27 points per game with four top rushers. Senior quarterback Jake Gutierrez totaled more than 1,000 yards with 12 TDs this fall. Senior fullback Gary Comstock leads Corning with 676 yards rushing and 10 scores. Nikoda Amiker (685 total yards and eight scores), Clayton Crosby (268 rushing yards and two TDs) and Landon Lucas (386 rushing yards) are speedier options in the backfield. Tight end Eli Mason (three receptions for 35 yards and three scores) and Jordan Grubb (four catches for 136 yards and two TDs) pace the passing game. Comstock leads the defense with 93 tackles and four turnovers at linebacker, where Rhett Eddington wrapped up 26 tackles this year. Grubb (30 tackles with a team-high four interceptions) and John Ethan Swint (two interceptions) make plays in the secondary.
