Legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal dies; Here's what he told us about his most famous quote

Darrell K Royal, who coached the Texas Longhorns to three national titles and became the biggest college football icon in Texas, has died at age 88. I interviewed the legendary coach in 2003 for Hooten's Arkansas Football and our cover story, "Full Tilt 2003," concerning the offensive explosion at the time. Here's what Coach Royal said in that interview about his most famous quote:

"It was the 1969 season and we were leading the nation in scoring," Royal said. "And each week the press was asking me when we were going to open it up. I thought we were full tilt, but they kept asking when we were going to pass more. So, I just flippantly said, 'Three things happen when you pass, and two of them are bad.' To this day that is the most quoted thing I ever said. We got the reputation of being anti-pass when the forward pass was very good to us. If you check our record in big games, you'll see we won with the pass."
