6A CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

Hootens.com preseason number two El Dorado avenged last season's state finals loss by defeating Pine Bluff 27-20.  El Dorado fell to the Zebras 28-26 Week 10 but overcame an eight point deficit to clinch its first state championship since 1958 and 600th victory as a program.  El Dorado junior tailback and linebacker Cameron Mahone earned championship game MVP honors, making eight tackles (two for loss), one sack, and returning an interception 52 yards for a touchdown. On offense, Mahone rushed twice for 10 yards, including the game-winning score with 8:24 remaining.  Senior James Ford rushed 13 times for 93 yards and a score, and junior John Miles carried nine times for 65 yards and a score.  Senior Clay Murphy snagged five passes for 90 yards.  Pine Bluff led 20-14 at the half and outgained the Wildcats 357-300 but could not stop the rush in the second half.  El Dorado tallied 146 second-half yards.  The Wildcats finished 12-1 and ran their record to 23-4 over the past two seasons with two conference titles and a state championship.
Decorated senior Claude Johnson fell short in leading the Zebras to their first title since 1995.  Johnson accounted for 336 total yards and two TDs.  The senior completes a celebrated career by starting every game in high school and passing for more than 3,000 yards and rushing for more than 1,100 yards.  Senior Jonathan Frazier caught five passes for 108 yards and a TD in the title game.  Junior Justin Bishop added five receptions for 59 yards and a score.
