6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 2 Pine Bluff vs. No. 1 El Dorado

 
These two battle at noon Saturday for the second time in four weeks. Pine Bluff beat El Dorado 28-26 Week 10 in Pine Bluff and has won seven straight since starting 2-4. Pine Bluff's four losses came in dramatic fashion, allowing  FS Northside to score 33 unanswered points and West Memphis to rally from 28 down. The Zebras were stopped on fourth and goal with less than 1:30 to play in losses to Lake Hamilton and Watson Chapel.

Super Sonic Team senior quarterback Claude Johnson leads Pine Bluff, which beat opponents by an average of 20 points since its Week 6 loss to Lake Hamilton. Last week the Zebras exacted revenge, winning at Lake Hamilton 50-42 with Johnson completing 11 of 20 passes for 270 yards and four TDs.  He rushed for 74 yards and three more TDs. Pine Bluff senior Jonathan Frazier caught 8 passes for 179 yards and three TDs. Lake Hamilton and Pine Bluff combined for 952 yards.

Pine Bluff faces its seventh straight Hootens.com Top 5 ranked team. El Dorado led 7-0 in the first meeting before Pine Bluff scored 28 unanswered with Johnson totaling 299 yards. El Dorado rallied with 19 straight, cutting Pine Bluff's lead to 28-26 but failed on a two-point attempt with 1:19 remaining.  In the loss, El Dorado junior QB Taylor Reed completed 17 of 29 for 281 yards, finding receiver Jaquario Miles six times for 134 yards. Senior James Ford rushed for 99 yards.

El Dorado beat Watson Chapel in the semis for the second straight season last week.  El Dorado led 17-7 at halftime but Watson Chapel used its ground attack to score 14 straight. Its defense held El Dorado to one second-half first down before El Dorado put together a game-winning drive. Reed connected with Ford for 14 yards and senior stud Clay Murphy on passes of 11 and 35 yards before Ford put El Dorado up for good on a TD run with 5:02 remaining.

El Dorado lost in the finals last season to Lake Hamilton 42-28 and in 2001 to Bentonville 23-16. El Dorado looks for its 600th career win Saturday.
Pine Bluff makes its first finals appearance since capping a three-peat in 1995. The Zebras won it all by beating Conway in 1993, LR McClellan in 2004 and FS Northside in 2005.
