HOOTENS.COM GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 3 Charleston at Class 4A No. 30 Ozark
It's the Franklin County Feud, and these teams have split the past four meetings.
Charleston's lost two straight games, battling injuries and playing several underclassmen. The Tigers were without seven starters in last week's 30-12 loss to Prairie Grove. Junior quarterback Jackson Rowland did not play after injuring his knee in Wednesday's practice. Senior Wade Gerlick filled in for Rowland, generating 270 yards and a touchdown. Coach Greg Kendrick praised Charleston's effort in the second half. "I saw us get a lot better," Kendrick says. The Tigers were able to move the ball, while holding Prairie Grove's first-team offense to 57 yards on three possessions. Charleston gets at least two starters back this week (senior cornerbacks Bridges Godfrey and Alex Sharp). Junior end Drew Young could return.
Ozark blasted Booneville 26-0 two weeks ago, limiting the Bearcats to 108 yards in the first half. Kent Smith, one of 24 seniors, ran for 105 yards and three TDs. Last week, Ozark lost to Clarksville 18-14. Clarksville's sophomore QB passed for 167 yards and two TDs. The Hillbillies last beat Charleston in 2012 when they played for the Class 4A state title. Ozark's 20-14 win in 2011 was its first victory in the series since it renewed in 2004. "They're very big and physical," Kendrick says. "They're really good at what they do. They have a slew of tailbacks who all run hard and very good linebackers who play downhill."
